How will children be taught phonics?

Layton's Letters and Sound Systematic Synthetic Phonics approach is informed by children’s existing knowledge, delivered systematically and allows knowledge gaps to be addressed via precision teaching. Phonics knowledge is expected to be learnt, forgotten, revised and retrieved to use and apply.

Layton Letters and Sounds SSP curriculum is intended to be taught as part of a broad and rich curriculum that has communication and language at its core, links language with physical and practical experiences, and provides an environment rich in print and abundant in opportunities to engage with books.

The bespoke curriculum is based on the context of Layton Primary School such that emphasis is placed on addressing the speech and language needs of the Foundation Stage intake as a prerequisite for the teaching and learning of phonics. Prior to the children starting in September, as much information is gathered to determine a baseline starting point for each child to assess which stage of the LLS programme they should start at.

Children access a stage-appropriate daily phonics lesson every day at Layton Primary School until the end of Stage 6 is achieved.
