"I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious"
Albert Einstein
Science at Layton ensures that children acquire scientific knowledge and use this to raise their own questions about the world around them. Our curriculum is segmented into Biology, Chemistry and Physics and key knowledge within each strand is given primacy. Through a spiral curriculum structure, and regular retrieval practise of key learning, knowledge is developed progressively in order to ensure that learning is embedded within the long-term memory as children journey through school.
Applying their disciplinary and substantive knowledge, our children formulate questions, devise and plan experiments, form hypotheses and draw conclusions. We prioritise a practical approach to science and place a high value on curiosity to enthuse and engage pupils in their learning. They build their knowledge year upon year towards a sound body of knowledge.
Children access an ambitious, thought-provoking Science curriculum. In line with our school values, teachers facilitate discussion through dialogic teaching and formative assessment, encouraging children to share their findings, thoughts and conclusions. Our diverse reading spine offers children a variety of texts, both fiction and non-fiction, in order to ignite their continued curiosity about the wider world.
Children are provided with a variety of enrichment opportunities, developing their wider knowledge, through trips, visitors and hands-on experiences. Children view themselves as scientists of the future.
