"Maths is not just a numbers game, it’s a way of thinking"

    Naseem Nicholas Taleb

At Layton Primary School, we are committed to ensuring all pupils think mathematically and make clear connections through effective teaching and learning and mastery of key mathematical concepts alongside mental and written strategies' calculation. Pupils extend their mathematical knowledge through the application of key concepts in a variety of contexts. In doing so, pupils can make connections across areas of maths; it is an interconnected subject and our curriculum planning reflects this.

In KS1 and KS2, pupils are given opportunities to revise, consolidate, extend and apply their mathematical skills in a variety of contexts to ensure mastery of mathematical understanding. As pupils move through school, they can confidently utilise the skills they have mastered to tackle problems using mental strategies. Using effective dialogic teaching, children can discuss their thinking with others and share the strategies and methods they have used to solve challenging problems – this follows our school motto, ‘Growing Great Minds Together.’ Our curriculum is bespoke and tailored to meet the needs of all our pupils. Teachers are skilled at identifying gaps in pupils’ mathematical knowledge and ensuring learning meets the needs of all children.

All pupils at Layton will leave primary school after mastering numbers, with the skills to apply their mathematical knowledge in a variety of contexts. Children will have the confidence to prove and justify their thinking using mathematical language and will approach problems with resilience, confidence and independence, having developed secure knowledge and understanding over time.
